Back to Earth

by Omar on March 17, 2010

We left the Self-Publishing Symposium and had a celebratory dinner at Dos Caminos in Soho. Then we headed out to JFK where Steph and James were holed up for the night. This cramped hotel room became the site of the 3rd Power Summit.

On the agenda, ramping up our online presence, increasing interactivity on Facebook, and launching multimedia on our blog (look out for TPC TV and TPC FLICKR coming soon!!). For those of you who have been following our trials and tribulations closely, you know we had to ban the words “F$% You” from all future Power Summits. Well, in the 3rd Power Summit we banned another word. What could this heinous word be you ask? Mentor. As it applies to interpersonal relationships between Omar and James, James and Omar, Omar and Steph, or James and Steph. Most especially James and Steph, lol. You have to remember that beyond being passionate writers and business partners, James and Steph are a real life couple as well and every now and then this personal relationship bleeds over into TPC business.

Once the word “mentor” was forever squashed, the partners went back to business laying out the March task list (top item: finishing SELLOUT edits), budget, and key deliverables. The SPS was long forgotten by the time Omar packed up his laptop and left Steph and James with five hours to sleep before returning to Santa Cruz. Reality had set back in. The daunting task of getting SELLOUT ready to “sell out” had definitely brought TPC back to earth.

Hello, Everyone:

For some reason I don’t understand, today I suddenly was deluged with e-mail messages under the title DIVA. I have no idea how I got on DIVA’s list, but I checked out some of the messages, clicked on a few web addresses and landed here. I just published a book titled CONFESSIONS OF A SLOT MACHINE QUEEN: A MEMOIR. I also have a blog, “A Black Woman’s Reflections on Casino Gambling (www.saadell.wordpress.com). Like you, I founded my own company and will start accepting submissions in September, 2010. I didn’t make it to the Self-Publishing symposium., because I was busy with the release of my book, but I’m happy to hear that it was a positive and worthwhile experience for you. You might also be interested in an online organization I joined, SPAN, Small Publishers Association of North America. I got some valuable information about book manufacturing, marketing and public relations from the forums. (By the way, that’s the number one after my name in the gmail e-mail address.)

Hello fellow publisher! :) The Self-Publishing Symposium was great, and you should definitely check it out if you can next year — not just for the information, but for the amazing people you can connect with in a truly intimate setting. There aren’t that many of us doing what we’re doing, and I love the idea of a little community / support system ;) Thanks for dropping by, and for the tip about SPAN. We should definitely keep in touch!
